One day in Luxembourg City: old town, casemates and Grund

By Reda Chaouki, founder of Itinerarly · November 8, 2026

Luxembourg City is small enough to see in a day, but it is built on two levels: the Upper City on its rock, and the old quarters down in the Alzette valley. This plan follows the Complete Luxembourg audio tour in the Itinerarly app: the palace, the casemates, the Corniche and the Grund in the morning, then the national museum, the Golden Lady and the Adolphe Bridge.

At a glance: 7 stops, about 1.6 km in straight lines between them (expect a bit more on foot), and about 2 h 20 of walking and listening, plus the time you spend inside the sights.

Morning: Grand Ducal Palace, Bock Casemates, Chemin de la Corniche, Grund Quarter

  1. Grand Ducal PalaceWelcome to the Grand Ducal Palace, the city's official residence of the Sovereign of Luxembourg. This architectural gem of 16th-century Spanish Renaissance style originally served as the city hall before becoming the heart of the Luxembourg monarchy.
  2. Bock Casemates↳ 293 m from the previous stop (straight line)You are entering the Bock Casemates, an extraordinary network of tunnels and underground galleries carved directly into the fortress rock. Nicknamed the 'Gibraltar of the North', this complex defensive system, developed over several centuries by the Spanish, Austrians, and French, once spanned 23…
  3. Chemin de la Corniche↳ 233 m from the previous stop (straight line)Welcome to the Chemin de la Corniche, often described as 'Europe's most beautiful balcony'. This spectacular promenade follows the path of the upper city's ancient ramparts, offering unforgettable bird's-eye views over the Alzette gorge and the picturesque Grund quarter.
  4. Grund Quarter↳ 139 m from the previous stop (straight line)Here is the Grund, Luxembourg's oldest and most charming district, nestled at the bottom of the Alzette valley. Once a refuge for craftsmen using the water's power, this lower quarter has preserved its medieval character and peaceful atmosphere.

Afternoon: MNHA Museum, Gëlle Fra Monument, Pont Adolphe

  1. MNHA Museum↳ 276 m from the previous stop (straight line)Welcome to the National Museum of History and Art (MNHA), the guardian of the nation's artistic and historical treasures. Located in the Fish Market district, the museum is an architectural feat blending historic houses with a modern expansion carved seven levels underground into the mountain rock.
  2. Gëlle Fra Monument↳ 402 m from the previous stop (straight line)Here is the Gëlle Fra, or the 'Golden Lady'—Luxembourg's iconic Monument of Remembrance. Perched atop an obelisk in Constitution Square, this statue honors the Luxembourgish volunteers who fought in World War I, as well as all those who fell for freedom in later conflicts.
  3. Pont Adolphe↳ 212 m from the previous stop (straight line)Here is the Adolphe Bridge, a national icon of Luxembourg and a masterpiece of early 20th-century engineering. Opened in 1903, it featured at the time the largest stone masonry arch ever built in the world.
