Casemates and Corniche
The stops, in order
- Bock CasematesYou are entering the Bock Casemates, an extraordinary network of tunnels and underground galleries carved directly into the fortress rock. Nicknamed the 'Gibraltar of the North', this complex defensive system, developed over several centuries by the Spanish, Austrians, and French, once spanned 23 kilometers. These casemates could shelter thousands of soldiers, their horses, and even kitchens and bakeries during a siege.
- Chemin de la CornicheWelcome to the Chemin de la Corniche, often described as 'Europe's most beautiful balcony'. This spectacular promenade follows the path of the upper city's ancient ramparts, offering unforgettable bird's-eye views over the Alzette gorge and the picturesque Grund quarter. Below you, the red-tiled roofs, the ancient Neumünster Abbey, and the winding river form a living painting of rare harmony.
- Grund QuarterHere is the Grund, Luxembourg's oldest and most charming district, nestled at the bottom of the Alzette valley. Once a refuge for craftsmen using the water's power, this lower quarter has preserved its medieval character and peaceful atmosphere. Stroll through its cobblestone alleys, admire the stone bridges spanning the river, and gaze at the imposing silhouette of Neumünster Abbey, now a renowned cultural center.
- Place d'ArmesWelcome to Place d'Armes, the genuine outdoor living room for Luxembourgers, located in the heart of the Upper City. Lined with lime trees and numerous café terraces, this square is the favorite meeting spot for locals and visitors alike. It originally served as a parade ground for garrison troops, hence its name.
- Pont AdolpheHere is the Adolphe Bridge, a national icon of Luxembourg and a masterpiece of early 20th-century engineering. Opened in 1903, it featured at the time the largest stone masonry arch ever built in the world. Spanning the deep Pétrusse Valley, it connects the Station district to the Upper City, providing a monumental entrance into the historic heart.
